Yeah, this is Microsoft Windows related, but it doesn't hurt the share the info since so many of us work in mixed environments.

For may Stats class, we have online homework. They have you install several IE pluggins so that you can use their online crapware. So I have a dedicated XP VirtualBox just to do homework for that class. I hate to think what normal students do, just click the button so you can get back to windows.

Free publicity for Symantec?

Wow. Just wow. Thanks for posting this video again, although I admit that tt's a really, really, REALLY stupid segment. Watching it reminded me of how I couldn't live without free software and GNU/Linux. No mention of GNU/Linux during the video or even (non-free) Mac as an alternative to avoid being infected?

If Microsoft and Symantec wanted what's best for people rather than trying to get as much money out of us as they can:

a) Microsoft would provide the complete source code to these "so-called" security experts, and

b) these "so-called" security experts (cough - Symantec - cough) should--instead of just making another virus signature to sell, study the source code of Windows (or whatever is running) that is vulnerable and tell Microsoft how to make the application more resistant to the virus.

Ah well. It's funny to see in the same segment how that woman had her bank account compromised even though she claimed to have AV/Firewall/AntiSpyware/etc. installed.

But imagine, after watching this video, if Microsoft claim "security through obscurity" how torn down Windows would be if the source code was publicly available. Happy days :)

Source code to Windows

I believe that some institutions (perhaps only academic?) have a license for the source code to Windows. I believe the source for Windows is out there but it is definitely not publicly available nor shareable.

Thanks

Thanks for posting this video, I knew there was a 60 Minute episode, but didn't realize they'd published the video online.

Its not all Windows!

Well at least they are using Ubuntu to illustrate the key logger.
