Meeting Information

Where

The BozemanLUG meets at the following location:

Montana State University Bozeman
Engineering and Physical Sciences Building, Room 259 (EPS259)
Bozeman, MT 59717

Parking is available in the pay lot on the Southwest corner of S. 7th Avenue and W. Grant Street. At the start time of the meeting, the pay lot is still charging and you must pull a ticket to enter the lot. By the time the meeting is over, the pay lot is no longer charging and the entry barrier is open... so effectively, parking is free.

When

BozemanLUG meetings are generally on the FIRST Thursday of the month unless it conflicts with a holiday. Please check the Events calendar in the left-hand column to see the meetings scheduled for all of the LUGs in Montana including the BozemanLUG. Meetings USED to be the LAST Thursday of the month, but we changed it to the FIRST Thursday in Jan. 2013.

There is also a shared Zimbra calendar with all of the LUG meeting information available for those with iCal compatible calendar applications:

https://mail.montanalinux.org/home/dowdle/MontanaLinux

Please note that we are cheap and use a self-signed SSL certificate rather than a store bought one... so it is ok to disregard the SSL Certificate warning if you encounter it.

Meetings start at 7:00 PM and have no formal ending time but usually end around 9PM or later.

OLPC, the XO, Sugar Labs, Sugar, and SoaS

Hello,

For the past year and a half I have been a support volunteer with One Laptop Per Child (OLPC). As such, I answer questions online, help folks with projects, and help spread the OLPC/Sugar story. I am not a Linux programmer. My programming skills stopped with Pascal many years ago. But, I am a retired educator and know enough about computers and programming to be useful to the project.

My husband and I have been coming to MT for the past 50 summers, and are building a log house on the Yellowstone River near Pray in Paradise Valley. We will return to Montana in early June. I will be bringing 5 XOs with me...a "Roadshow In a Box." I would enjoy bringing the XOs and sharing the OLPC and SugarLabs story with your group this summer.

I will be in Bozeman on the day of your June meeting as I will be taking someone to the airport that day and we could probably come to the meeting that evening.

My hope is that some of your members will take an interest in developing Activities (educational programs) for the XO. All of our software is Linux based and open source. I am also hoping to get some advocates to work to bring this great educational resource to the children of Montana, either through a deployment of the XO computer or through the use of SoaS (Sugar on a Stick) with other computers.

If you would like to know a little more about OLPC and SugarLabs I have a slide show from a presentation I did at the CUE (Computer Using Educators) conference in Palm Springs last month.
You can find it on the OLPC wiki at:

You might also want to take a look at the FLOSS manual for our project. It is available free as a pdf file at:

Let me know via email if you are interested in knowing more about this important educational project.

Caryl,

Billings is just a short drive from Bozeman and we would love to have you as well if you have time. If not I will try to make it to Bozeman.
